Selectorized machines: the pin, the guide rods, and the stack

If the pin does not go through the plate, the machine is not ‘a bit stiff’. It is not selecting the weight the user thinks.
The selector pin is the safety device. It must pass through the chosen plate and hold. A bent pin, a missing magnet, or a plate that will not align takes the machine out of service.
Guide rods that are dry may squeak. Guide rods that are damaged will stick under load. Do not tell a member to “pull harder”. Sticking under load is how a stack drops late.
Shrouds
Shrouds hide the interesting faults and also hide debris. When you open one, look for broken belt or cable strands, a rubbing path, and weight plates that are cracked. A cracked plate is out of service.
Write which side you opened. “Checked the stack” does not tell the next person whether they are repeating you.
Increment weights that can be added on a horn need the same attention as the main stack. A loose add-on is a small plate with a large consequence.
