A spare machine in the back is not a strategy until it is in the file

The treadmill in the corridor is either in service, stored with known faults, or scrap. It is not a secret backup.
Spare equipment feels like insurance. It is only insurance if you know its condition and you can put it on the floor without a project. Otherwise it is a store of unknown faults.
Give it a status: stored, with a sentence about what is wrong, what is missing, and whether it is safe to return. “Spare treadmill” with a dead belt and no console is not a spare. It is a parts donor or scrap, and those are different.
When you swap
A swap is two moves. The floor machine leaves service or goes to storage. The spare enters service with its own history, not with a wiped file. If you swap frames and keep one code, you have lied about which belt failed.
Do not let a spare sit so long that nobody will stand behind it. Review stored kit when you do the year-end reading. Sell, scrap, or schedule a return. A corridor full of “might be useful” is how the real spare, the one pin you need, stays buried.
If it is a parts donor, label it as such so a helpful person does not wheel it out for a class.
