The equipment inspection before you open
17.3.2025 · 3 min lukuaika
Walk the floor before members train. A stop that fails, a broken cable strand, or a missing collar closes that machine before the door opens.
The equipment inspection before you open is a walk, in the same order every day, by someone who will mark a machine out of service. It is not a glance from the desk. It takes less time than a member finding the fault in the first class.
Walk in an order you can repeat
Start at the door and follow the zones the way a member walks: cardio, strength, free weights, the studio, the rig. The same order every day means a skipped corner is obvious. A random wander means the rower behind the door gets inspected on the days you remember it.
You are looking for things that injure, not for dust. Dust is cleaning. A frayed cable, a belt that has walked off the roller, a pedal with play, a collar missing from a bar that is in use, a bent fan cage, and a stop that does not stop are the inspection.
Cardio first if that is where people start
On each treadmill, the belt is centred and the stop works. You do not need a full maintenance service at open. You need to know the belt is on the rollers and the emergency stop kills it. A treadmill already waiting on a part stays out. A sign on the frame and the status in the register say the same thing.
On bikes, rock each pedal. Play is a close. On rowers, the chain or strap is connected and the rail is not a hazard. On ellipticals, the pedals and arms move without a clunk you can feel at the first step. Details live in the notes on indoor bikes, rowers, and ellipticals.
Strength and the rig
A selector pin that will not seat closes that station. You do not need the shroud off every morning. You need the pin, a cable you can see, and a stack that is not already hanging crooked. Free-weight bars in use have collars if the lift needs them. A rig bolt that turns by hand, or a j-cup that is missing from a station set for squats, is out of use until it is fixed. Count the spotter arms. A missing one is a fault for the stations that need it.
What you do with a find
Mark the machine out of service on the frame and in the register before you open the door. A verbal “don’t use that one” does not survive the first rush. Open the fault on that asset. If you can fix a collar or a sign in two minutes, do it and write it. If you cannot, the machine stays closed. Do not leave a known broken strand because the technician comes on Thursday.
The inspection itself is a record: who walked, and what was closed. A blank sheet is not a completed walk. Tie it to the preventive plan so the daily walk stays short and the weekly pass does the slower work.

Kit in a children’s area is still equipment
Smaller does not mean informal. A broken hold, a loose bolt, or a torn mat is a fault with a status.
Clearance is a condition of the machine
A treadmill too close to a mirror, or a rack too close to a walkway, will be reported as the machine’s fault. Measure it once.
A hot smell is a stop, not a note for later
Hot insulation, a warm plug, or a console that smells sweet and sharp: take the machine off and do not switch it back on to ‘see’.
