How to replace a cable on a selectorized machine

Replace a cable when a strand is broken, the line is kinked, the end fitting is cracked, or the cable has stretched so the stack no longer travels its range. A light shine on the surface is not a replacement. A single broken wire is. That machine is out of service until the cable is changed. A member cannot “use the other side” if the cable is what holds the stack.

Find which run failed

Selectorized machines and functional trainers often have more than one cable: a short one at the stack and a longer one out to the handle. Write which run you are replacing. Replacing “the cable” without saying which one is how the next order is the wrong length.

Follow the line with the shroud off and the stack supported the way the manual shows. A stack that can drop while you unhook a cable is the hazard, not the fray. Hands and faces stay out of the path.

Look at the pulleys on that run before you thread the new cable. A pulley with a sharp groove cuts the new line in a week. The pulley is a separate part. Change it in the same job if the groove is damaged. Leave a note if you kept it.

Length comes from this machine

Use the diagram for this model, or measure the old cable including the fittings if the diagram is gone. Do not cut a cable “about the same” as the lat pulldown next to it. Cam machines and straight-stack machines in the same brand do not share a length. Cybex, gym80, Technogym, Matrix, and Panatta stations on one floor are different cables.

Do not splice a broken cable with a clamp. The splice is a new failure point and it changes the travel. Do not shorten a long cable to make it fit a different station.

After it is on

Move the stack through the whole range with no extra weight, then with a normal pin selection. The cable should sit in every pulley, the stop should still stop the stack, and the handle should return without a slack loop that can catch a finger. If the pin will not pass through the plate, stop. That is the selector pin or the stack, and the machine stays closed.

Put the shroud back. An open stack is not a finished job.

The record

Write the run, the old length or part mark, and whether a pulley was changed. Photos of the fray belong on the issue. The public page does not need the part number. The work order does. If this was the second cable on the same station this year, say so. That is a signal about pulleys or about how the station is used, and it belongs next to the decision to repair or replace.
