Emergency stops have to be reachable and real

On treadmills and any machine with powered movement, the stop and the safety tether are part of the inspection, not an accessory. If a member cannot hit the stop without searching, the machine is not ready.

Look for blocks: bottles, towels, a phone shelf built in the wrong place, a poster. Then test. A button that clicks and does not stop the belt is a safety fault. Take it out of service.

Tethers

If the clip is missing, the treadmill is out until it is replaced. Do not tell members the button is enough if the machine was built to use the clip. Write which machines have a tether and which use another method, so staff do not invent a policy per shift.

Test on a schedule you will keep, not every hour. Record the test on the asset when you do it. A stop that failed last month and has no later pass is still an open question.

Never bypass a stop to “get through the class”. That sentence does not belong on a work order except as the reason someone was stopped.
