What to do when the serial plate is gone

A missing plate does not make the machine unidentifiable. It means you need another mark, and a note that the plate is missing.
Plates peel off, get painted over, or were never stuck on the side you can see. The asset still needs a stable identity.
Photograph whatever is left: a faded stamp on the frame, a console serial, a sticker inside the shroud. Write “plate missing” on the file so the next person does not spend twenty minutes looking for it.
A mark you control
Put your own code on the upright, in the same place on every machine of that type. The public label and the internal code can be the same. Do not invent a manufacturer serial. A guessed serial will later match the wrong warranty claim.
If two machines arrived without plates, do not assume they are interchangeable in the history. One may have had a motor replaced. Keep them as separate files from the moment you can tell them apart by place.
When a technician finds the real serial during a service, add it. Do not start a new asset. The faults already recorded belong to this machine.

The model and serial are on a plate on the frame or inside the console bay. Photograph them. If the plate is gone, say so. Do not invent a number.
