Read a treadmill belt before you replace the motor

Walk-off, glaze, and a hot smell have a short list of causes. The motor is not the first guess.

A treadmill that tracks to one side, slips under foot, or smells hot is usually telling you about the belt, the deck, the tension, or dirt. Motors fail too. They are just not the first sentence of the job.

Look at where the belt sits between the rails. Look at the underside for glaze and for debris. Listen for a rhythmic slap. Feel whether the deck is rough in one lane, which is common when people always run in the same spot.

Write the test

After any adjustment, walk it yourself through a speed the members use, not only the lowest setting. Note the speed and what you felt. “Adjusted” without the test is an unfinished job.

If you replace a belt, record whether the deck was dressed or replaced with it. A new belt on a damaged deck comes back as the same fault.

Keep the machine out of service while the belt can walk off. A centred belt at no load that walks off under a runner is not ready.
