Hand the shift over on the register, not in the doorway

A conversation at the door disappears. The open faults and the unfinished jobs do not, if they are written on the assets.
Doorway handovers fail in predictable ways. The important machine is the one that gets mentioned last, or not at all, because a member is waiting.
The handover is the list of open faults, the jobs in progress, and anything taken out of service since the previous shift. If that list is on the assets, the next person can read it without you.
A short spoken layer is still useful
Say the exceptions: a contractor expected at 10, a part that arrived and is not fitted yet, a member who was angry about a machine you have already closed. Do not use the conversation to replace the record. Use it to point at the record.
If you have nothing open, say that too. “Nothing new” is a real handover. Silence is not.
New staff should be shown how to read the list before they are asked to remember it. The point of the register is that memory is not the system.

Tell a member the status, not the internal argument
The useful sentence is whether they can use it, and whether you already know. The part number is not for the floor.
Reset the rig to a known plan after class
A rig left as the last workout set it is a different machine. The closer puts it back and notes what broke.
Find the model and serial number on gym equipment
The model and serial are on a plate on the frame or inside the console bay. Photograph them. If the plate is gone, say so. Do not invent a number.
