Rowing machine maintenance

Rowing machine maintenance depends on which machine you have. An air rower, a water rower, and a dynamic erg do not share a chain, a tank, or a monitor. The name on the frame decides the parts. Concept2, WaterRower, RP3, First Degree, and Xebex are different jobs that only look related from across the room.

Air rowers

On a chain-driven air rower the wear is the chain, the connector at the handle, the rail, and the seat rollers. A fray at the handle is where it fails. Replace the connector or the chain when the strands open. Do not tape it for a class.

The rail should let the seat travel without a stick. Dirt is cleaning. A scored rail or a flat roller is a part. Vacuum the fan housing if the manual allows it. A bent cage closes the machine. The monitor can die and leave a mechanical rower usable. Write that limit. If the club uses the monitor for every session, a dead monitor is still a fault, just not a reason to call it a drive failure.

The damper setting is not a fault. Do not “repair” a rower because a member left the damper at 10.

Water and fluid rowers

On a water rower the tank, the seal, the strap, and the rail are the service. A leak is out of service. It is not a mop and a note that says “a bit wet”. Do not treat the wooden frame as furniture and ignore the strap. Wood finish is not a part number.

Fluid and magnetic ergs fail at the drive unit and the strap or chain. Record the model before you order a belt from an air-rower diagram.

Dynamic ergs

An RP3 or another dynamic erg is not a Concept2 with a different paint. The resistance unit and the way the seat moves are specific. If you do not have the service note for that model, do not improvise a chain from the air rower next to it. Write the serial from the frame and stop.

The file

Each rower is its own asset, even in a row of identical machines. Write which one: the rail end, a number, something a shift can find. The work order names the chain, the strap, the roller, or the tank, and whether the machine went back. A rower that binds on the rail is a morning close, the same as a bad stop on a treadmill, and it belongs on the opening inspection.
